RESEARCH & INNOVATION - TRAIT & SCIENCE SUPPORT
Main Goal
The Research Department of Limagrain Field Seeds is recruiting a Research Engineer in Image Analysis applied to digital phenotyping. The position is located in Chappes (63).
Drones, robots and other vectors have become essential tools for collecting data by taking photos. In the context of varietal improvement, these technologies provide access to information on the varieties evaluated during the selection process. This may be agronomic, phenological, yield-related or biotic or abiotic stress-related traits, for example. Varietal evaluation, and through it varietal improvement, are crucial activities at the heart of Limagrain's business.
The Project Manager in Image Analysis applied to Digital Phenotyping reports to the Envirotyping & Digital Phenotyping team. He/she is responsible for the deployment and evolution of these tools for one or more species. He/she is involved in understanding needs, defining and developing solutions, and supporting selection teams in the long-term, robust use of the tools deployed.
If you would like to gain experience in private research and in cutting-edge fields, if you are attracted by plants, and if you are comfortable with and have an appetite for new technologies, computer developments and data handling, don't wait any longer: this mission is made for you!
Job description
Your main tasks will be to:
- Evaluate and design image analysis algorithms to develop new traits in line with our research activities. With a good understanding of the phenotypic characteristics of the species worked on, you will be able to develop Python algorithms for analyzing images and translating this information into a trait that can be used for breeding. You test, analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the accuracy of the results provided. You participate in the maintenance and sustainability of the team's developments.
- Provide expertise and support for developments in digital phenotyping for the breeding community. You are a privileged point of contact for breeding teams. You know their needs. Thanks to your expertise in digital phenotyping methods and tools, you will draw up and follow a roadmap to meet their needs. You help to raise awareness of digital phenotyping issues within the LFS scientific community and promote them.
- Provide technical and logistical support to the breeding teams to help them use the new tools made available to them. You take part in training, draft protocols and guide the drone pilot community on a daily basis. You direct them to the appropriate contacts and/or provide support on the use of equipment, the image analysis platform and all related subjects. You are also responsible for upgrading the support system to make it increasingly efficient.
- Maintain a scientific and technical watch on the development of traits based on digital phenotyping: maintain a bibliography on the subject. Attend scientific conferences/seminars. Identify potential collaborations with service providers, academic or industrial players.
Skills: what we expect of you
You have a 5-year degree (Master 2 or engineering school). You are a statistician, data scientist or agricultural engineer with a taste for new technologies and data processing. Your skills in agronomy, plant genetics and/or ecophysiology will be a plus, as will knowledge of GIS. You have demonstrated programming skills in Python, R and/or any other data analysis-oriented language.
Given the international working environment, you must be fluent in written and spoken scientific English. Occasional travel is to be expected. Rigorous, dynamic and serious, you have good organizational and interpersonal skills. You enjoy working as part of a team, but are also able to work independently during your assignments.
