Main Goal
Doctoral thesis on studying the molecular interactions between a cereal virus and wheat partner proteins
Job description
In collaboration with the company Limagrain, based in Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, you will conduct a research project in an INRAE laboratory (UMR1332 BFP-Aquitaine Bordeaux) under the supervision of the laboratory head, focusing on the interaction between BYDV and wheat.
Crop diseases cause approximately 220 billion euros in annual losses to the global economy. Among these, Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV, Luteoviridae) can lead to yield losses of up to 84% in major cereal crops such as wheat. The main approach to managing BYDV involves the use of chemical pesticides, raising significant environmental and health concerns. This underscores the need to seek alternative sustainable sources of genetic resistance. This imperative has recently inspired a joint initiative between INRAE and Limagrain, leading to the discovery of new potential susceptibility factors currently being evaluated as novel sources of genetic resistance against BYDV.
The objective of the proposed doctoral project will be to explore the molecular mechanisms of the newly identified susceptibility factors involved in lipid and protein transfer, metabolism, and recycling. The project will investigate whether the interaction of BYDV proteins with host proteins alters certain functions, potentially preventing the degradation of BYDV proteins.
Moreover, the PhD student will participate in functional validation studies to experimentally verify whether the newly identified susceptibility factors confer resistance to BYDV in cereal crops. This is a unique opportunity for the candidate to engage in cutting-edge fundamental and applied science within a collaborative framework involving both academic and industrial sectors.
The project is expected to yield a dual benefit: scientifically, by elucidating cellular responses to BYDV infection, and socio-economically, through the identification of new genetic resistance sources, thereby aligning with environmental initiatives such as ECOPHYTO 2025 and the EU's 'Farm to Fork' strategy to promote sustainable agriculture.
